Just for the Sound of It

Even working gantries pant
and panting gantries want
to creak and groan and
whine as is a working gantry’s wont.

And cranes again withstand the pain
of many hours lifting
the straining chain
wraps round the train
as gearwheels heft
the heavy load
from ship to shore and
then to road

the walls of malls are tall
and balls cannot atop them
but fingers cling and claw
and paw and starting from the bottom
creep slowly up

Is sugar beet a greeting treat
and eating meat a feat
or beating meat
or meeting meat
a grand and good endeavour

is twaddle in a puddle
as dank and rank
as Thomas in a monastery.

Though Thomas in a monastery
is a bit more literary
