Chris

Hi, my name is Chris. I am retired. When I worked, I produced computer applications as both a system and software designer. In the early days we did not have personal or even mini computers. Everything was done on slow lumbering mainframe computers reading punched cards. I learned a lot about database design, particularly how to design relational databases properly. I also learned a lot about putting applications on the web.

I still take an interest in what is going on in the industry, and have recently immersed myself in ECMAScript v6 (Javascript) now that the language finally permits the structure needed for ‘proper’ programming, and is being rapidly propagated across all browsers, as well as providing sensible server side implementations (node.js) This has lead me into exploring more deeply REST programming, JSON Schema and many other sidelines.

My current project is WordPress to Dokuwiki project which extracts pages from a WordPress site and creates pages for a Dokuwiki site from them

I occasionally take on pro bono work for projects I have a special interest in. WordPress (as here) often gets used so I have become pretty familiar with it, but I still have a deep interest in the nuts and bolts that hold these higher level systems together, so I have spent some time writing plugins for WordPress (but not themes). I also want to explore browser based content management systems (on the back of ECMA 6 and REST)

Well that’s my professional background. On a personal level I have two dear friends that I am lucky enough to live with and who enrich my life greatly. I used to belong to a writers group that met three times a month, once in Kerobokan and twice in Ubud. The pandemic killed t off. Now I enjoy an on-line gay writers group hhosed by a riend in Portland. Mostly I write rubbish, but occasionally something more inspiring comes out. “The Elephant in the Room” is one of mine and is a fun bit of reading. If you know terry Pratchett’s writing, you will recognise the style. In the past, I wrote quite a lot of poetry. Some of it was of the cathartic kind that many people write in times of trouble, but there are also political, love and funny poems to lighten the mix. If you are interested you can check out my poetry pages.

Also, I have started to collect some of my prose attempts here. Thoughtful, humorous or just plain rubbish. You may find them here
