When the full moon rises

With honour and respect to Su Shi, author of Danyuan Ren Chanjiu

When the full moon rises
shadow spirits dance
shadow troubles fill my mind,
and keep me from my trance

But, I should not hate the moon
whose shadows curb my sleep
The rays that fall upon me here
Fall also on my friends most dear
And though they be so far away
We are re-joined by moonlight’s ray.

By turns the moon is bright and dark
By turns we meet and part
Clouds sometimes obscure the moon
and make our friendships dark

If only our friendships could last forever
Life would be forever beautiful
